Introduction

As you have learned in your American History class, it has been many years since the Civil war, and unfortunately many have forgotten the devastation. In order to remind people of this unfortunate but fantastic time period in our history you will be sent back into time and have the opportunity to experience first hand what took place. You will take on the role of someone living  during that time and focus on a particular issue pertaining to the War.  Your goal is to demonstrate to your peers what life was like for a particular historical group during this time in our history.

How were different types of people impacted by the issues of the Civil War?

Task

First, you will be assigned a particular historical role (see list under Roles). Using the book marked sites, you will then research one of four specific questions as it relates to this historical figure.   Upon completion of this research, you will meet in a group with students who have researched the same question and compare and contrast the effect this question had on the various roles.  Collaboratively, you will create a power point presentation that depicts the impact your assigned question/topics had on all people during the Civil War. Your power point will enable your class to learn how each historical group dealt with the issues of the times.

The Process

Each student will be assigned a particular question and role.  The questions are as follows:

How was westward expansion into the territories viewed?

What effect did slavery have on individuals living during the Civil War?

How and in what ways did the Civil War effect people living during that time period?

What was the economic status of each individual during the war?

Research your question using the book marked sites.  After you have gathered the necessary information, you will come together with others focusing on your question and put together a power point presentation. You will be able to work on the power point on your own as well as with your group, and then put it all together at the end.

Specific criteria needs to be gathered for each person:  accurate and thorough information sufficient enough to complete 4-6 frames of a power point.  Focus on first hand accounts, historical documents, and any other resources that tell you about your particular role.
